From the Mayor's Desk - December 2016

December is here and another year is nearing its end. While we celebrated Thanksgiving last month, we recently received some news that ratchets our level of thankfulness up another notch. The Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council notified us that our grant application in the amount of $800,0022 to continue resurfacing two of our main arterial streets, Evergreen Drive and Cascade Drive, has been approved. These two sections of our streets have been in need of repair for some time, but we have not been financially able to afford the costs on our own. Through the efforts of our City Hall staff, we have succeeded once again in acquiring a grant sufficient in size to enable us to continue making much needed improvements to our city’s infrastructure.

This project will start next summer and will pick up on the east side of the green bridge over Hamilton Creek. The section to be repaved will include the remainder of Evergreen Drive heading east to Cascade Drive and continuing east on Cascade Drive to its intersection with Hot Springs Way.

We will also see a second major project next summer when the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) replaces their bridge over Hamilton Creek. As part of this project, improvements will be made to the pathway that goes under State Route 14, connecting the northern and southern parts of our city. The pathway will be reconfigured to reduce the grade of the northern end, where the pathway passes under the BNSF bridge before continuing east along Evergreen Drive. The current pathway is quite steep in this area and has been something we have wanted to address for some time. The completed project will result in an improved pathway that will be much easier to navigate on foot or by bicycle.
